About us

In 1998 Grant Gardener from Hastings started the General Motors Club. The contact person in
Auckland was Renee Porter, who advertised in the Petrolhead magazine for members to join her
in starting the Auckland base for the club. Barry Wood and Richard Ryll were two of the members
that joined from this advert. Barry took over as president a few years later. Max Coleman then
joined the club in 2001 after seeing some of the cars and meeting members at a Generals Day
out in Alexandra Park. Clint and Elaine Tau, Peter and Robyn Ganley and others all joined not
long after this. In the last 10 years the club has grown to around 60 members. In 2003 we started
the process of becoming an incorporated society, thus giving us some rules and guidelines to
adhere to. While now being a mainly Auckland based club, we still have members from all over
the country, even one family in the South Island.
We are a group of people who are passionate about all GM makes and models, and enjoy
showing off our cars and using them as much as possible. We now run two shows per year in the
Auckland region. We also try and have monthly outings, including poker runs, shed raids and
family days out, as we are a very family orientated club. Other activities include fishing comps,
Hampton Down race days, Drag racing, Xmas runs, and a birthday bash. With many other
activities that we attend with other clubs as well.
We have monthly meetings on the 1st Wednesday of every month at The Clevedon Hotel and encourage
members to attend as many as possible, because this is the time to have your say and also meet
other members and keep up to date with what’s going on. We also have a bi monthly newsletter
for financial members of the club, with heaps of info and club member car profiles.
Please don’t hesitate to contact one of the committee members for more information. We are a
very friendly bunch and always welcome new members to our club.
